On 9th October the Federation of National Public Service Personnel Mutual Aid Associations, to be referred to as KKR, issued an RFP for alternative investment. This move has been well anticipated as GPIF, the largest and most influential public pension fund in Japan, announced its plans to invest in alternative a while ago.

Just a day before, on 8th October at Japan`s Real Estate Investment & Management Forum Yukihiko Ito, the managing director of Asterisk, led a discussion with opinion leaders of Japanese investors on “what institutional investors want from real estate – the truth”. The main interests and focus were on overseas investments and the movement of public pensions which will significantly impact other investors` investment decisions.

KKR is currently looking to invest in alternative including real estate and infrastructure. The pension fund, which holds a portfolio of 65 billion USD, has not yet announced how much they plan to invest in alternative, but experts believe KKR will follow in the footsteps of GPIF and invest 5%, around 3.25 billion USD.

GPIF stated similar intentions last year, and a 176 billion USD pension fund issued an RFP earlier this year, making KKR the third Japanese public pension fund whale to go into alternative. Many expect the last whale, Private School Mutual Aid, to proceed in the same direction. The sum of all four pension funds is 1.42 trillion USD.

Those interested in alternative are not limited to pension funds, many major institutional investors are now looking at these asset classes too. This has stirred excitement among overseas fund managers who are now entering the Japanese market.
